“D...Did I do wrong?” Archer's voice was filled with confusion as his gaze fell on me. “Mama... what's wrong with your eyes?”
I paused, torn between telling him the truth and protecting him from it.
“Don’t lie to me like Papa did, Mama,” Archer added softly. I could feel his gaze on me, sharp and insistent, and it made me swallow the words I had prepared.
I let out a quiet chuckle. “What did Papa lie to you about?”
Archer buried his face against my neck. “He said you were busy handling the cases of the kids you saved.” His voice wavered. “But I found out he lied. You actually fell into a deep slumber.”
At that, I instinctively turned my head to the right—to glare at Lucien.
