Seeing the two of them curled up on the bed—Archer never once letting go of Claude’s hand even in his sleep—I couldn’t help but soften. And yet, guilt crept in just as quickly. A nine-year-old had been the one protecting a three-year-old, when it should have been the adults.
They had both been through too much.
Why does the Montero keep coming for us? For my family? What do they want from us?

I snapped out of my thoughts when a warm hand wrapped around my waist, his face burying into the crook of my neck. Even without looking, I knew exactly who it was.
“Have you finished dealing with him?” I asked calmly.
“I did.”
“Did you kill him?” I leaned back against his chest.
“I tortured him a little,” he answered, pausing before letting out a cold chuckle. “Until he begged me to kill him instead. But I didn’t. Death is far too easy for a traitor like him.”
“Where is he now?”
