Maverick stared at the toothbrush on the floor as he remained silent for a while.
"It's Arabella's."
Heidi was expecting to feel pain when he admitted this. But strangely enough, it felt like the part of her heart that was hanging in limbo all this time seemed to have finally died. There was no pain—only a prominent emptiness.
"Why did you lie?" she asked.
Maverick sighed. "Why do you think?"
Heidi understood what he meant. He reckoned she would've made a bigger fuss. By lying, things would've been fine if she believed it.
"When was she here?"
"The day before yesterday," Maverick explained. "She came over to the station to give me something, but she slipped and fell on the way and got her clothes wet.
"Since it's all men on the squad, and it would've been inconvenient, I brought her here to freshen up."
Heidi stared into his eyes. "And what was she doing that warranted brushing her teeth? Did she magically get her teeth dirty, or did she coincidentally spend the night?"
