Elena’s POV
I stayed still on the bed when I heard him enter the room. I pretended to be asleep, my breathing slow and even. But my mind was far from calm. Every thought kept going back to my grandmother; worrying about her health and seeing images of her weak in a hospital bed. Then to May—frozen in fear with a gun pointed at her head. No matter how hard I tried, I couldn’t shake the images away.
“Dinner will be ready soon,” Eric said casually, like we were a normal couple in a normal cabin. “I grilled fish.”
I didn’t move, I didn’t look at him and I didn’t answer, I wasn’t in a mood for talking to him. Silence stretched between us.
“Elena.” His voice dropped, rougher now. Still, I stayed still.
