“Noah, here’s your drink.” A girl leaned in and handed me a glass.
After leaving Olivia’s house, I went straight to Keith’s bar—The Velvet Hideaway. I needed to drink. I needed to get drunk enough to sleep, to shut my mind off so I wouldn’t keep thinking about Olivia… or about what she might be doing right now with her husband.
I had planned to drink alone. But Keith spotted me the moment I walked in. Before I could say a word, he insisted on dragging me into one of the private rooms where our friends—and a few familiar faces—were already gathered.
I ignored the girl and didn’t take the drink.
Earlier, I’d joined the guys for a round of poker. For the first time, luck completely abandoned me. I didn’t win a single hand. Eventually, I quit the game, took a seat on the sofa, and started drinking on my own.
Then the girl approached me. She noticed my glass was empty and refilled it without asking. I wasn’t in the mood to talk to anyone, but she either didn’t notice—or chose not to. S
