“Sorry, I didn’t mean that,” I lied, though the words came out flat.
Olivia rolled her eyes but stayed calm. “It’s okay. And thank you for your help tonight. I didn’t expect Hannah to call you.”
“If she calls you again, you don’t need to come. It’s too much of a hassle for you. We can handle it,” she added. “I was just about to take Margareth to the hospital when you showed up.”
I raised an eyebrow. “No, I don’t mind at all. Your house is close to my professor’s, so it wasn’t a hassle.”
Olivia fell silent, her gaze growing distant.
“Actually, I was about to have dinner with my professor when Hannah called. She was crying so hard, and with her heart condition, I couldn’t just ignore it. I rushed over without even eating,” I explained, trying to keep the conversation grounded.
“I’m sorry, again. I’ll make it up to you,” Olivia said.
A thought crossed my mind, and I smiled. “Actually, I passed a small diner on the way here.”
