Edward said, "Mom, don't say that in front of the kids."
Emily shot back, "If you're afraid I'll scold you, then don't do it!"
Emily was genuinely angry, her cane thudding heavily against the floor as she coughed a few times from frustration.
Worried she might hurt herself, Evelyn gently patted her back and handed her a glass of water. "Grandma, haven't you always taught me not to talk while eating? Why doesn't that rule apply to you?"
"You little rascal," Emily said, a fond smile breaking through as she looked at Evelyn's mischievous expression. "Fine, for your sake, I'll let him off the hook today."
At the table, Hugo had just taken a seat next to Evelyn when Emily shot him a sharp look.
"You're grown up, and you still have no sense? Hurry up and pour a glass of milk for Evie!"
Hugo gave a helpless smile, stood up, and reached for the glass.
"No thanks, Grandma. I don't like milk," Evelyn said, taking the glass and moving to sit on Emily's other side, serving her some shrimp
