Outside the hospital, Hugo helped Emily into the car. She kept coughing, and he tried to arrange for a family doctor to come by the house for a checkup.
She waved him off, her voice calm and flat. "No need. I know my own body. I'm not dying anytime soon."
"So, you don't want a great-grandchild anymore?"
She had been perfectly fine until he mentioned it. The moment he did, Emily scoffed. "Please. At the pace you're moving, you should be grateful you haven't driven your wife off already. I'm not counting on ever holding a great-grandchild."
Hugo pressed his lips together and draped a blanket over her. "Let the doctor drop by anyway. If something were to really happen to you, she wouldn't even be able to focus on recovering."
That finally softened Emily. She sighed. "This time, the Grants failed her. Evie's always been strong, but God knows how much she's hurting inside. No amount of money can make up for it."
