CHAPTER ONE HUNDRED AND SIXTY SIX – TRYING TO FIT IN
Before Charlotte could respond, Mrs. Thatcher reentered. "Lady Griffith is on her way. This room better be perfect."
Charlotte hurried to fix the imaginary flaw Maud had pointed out. As she bent down to adjust a rug, she heard Lady Griffith’s footsteps approaching.
"Ah, Mrs. Thatcher," Lady Griffith’s voice was sharp and cold. "Let’s see if this room meets my standards."
She walked slowly around the library, inspecting every detail with an eagle eye. Charlotte stood to the side, her hands clasped tightly together, praying that nothing was out of place.
"Charlotte," Lady Griffith said suddenly, making her flinch. "Come here."
Charlotte stepped forward, her heart pounding. "Yes, Lady Griffith?"
Lady Griffith’s eyes raked over her. "Your appearance is disgraceful. Hair out of place, uniform wrinkled. Do you think this is acceptable?"
"I’m sorry, Lady Griffith," Charlotte said, her voice trembling. "I’ll do better."
