Jaquan smiled at her and said, "I just saw the child. She's as adorable as in the photos, and her eyes look just like yours."
To Callie, his words felt like a blatant threat. She glared at him, spitting out a curse. "Touch her, and see what happens."
Jaquan acted as if he didn't hear her. "I'm her uncle, after all. I've been back for so long; it's about time I gave her a proper gift. Take me to meet her."
Downstairs, Regan was chatting with Grape, but Callie blocked his view. "Jaquan, children are innocent. If you have any grievances, take them out on me. Leave my daughter out of it."
Her fearless stance gave her the air of a true mother. Jaquan seemed momentarily dazed, as if recalling something. Without warning, he murmured, "When I first met you, you were just a little girl."
Callie turned her head away, unwilling to engage further. She headed downstairs. Suddenly, Jaquan called out, "You haven't told Nelson about it, have you?"
He was referring to the Snake case.
