“You’re being overly optimistic. I can’t guarantee that,” Nelson replied, his tone turning colder. The dim light from the window spilled into the room, casting a pale glow over his dark, foreboding coat.
“Then let me do it. I’ll give it everything I’ve got,” Callie said resolutely. As soon as the topic arose, the air between them grew tense.
In the midst of their stalemate, footsteps suddenly echoed outside. The sound of a key turning in the lock followed. Callie instinctively looked up just as Nelson’s figure darted into the bathroom.
Callie turned her head and saw Jaquan strolling in, unhurried. He looked slightly amused. “What? I thought you’d have smashed all my things by now.”
