She instinctively tried to pull her hand away, but he tightened his grip just as swiftly. The two stood frozen in place.
After a moment, Nelson regained his composure and slowly let go. “Did I scare you?”
That small, pitiful feeling of grievance crept back in. Callie lowered her gaze, instinctively wanting to escape. “I should head back now.”
She was afraid that if she stayed any longer, her sympathy might overflow.
But she hadn’t gone far when a thought struck her. Turning back, she asked, “Where are you and Grape staying now?”
Under the streetlamp, the man stood still. “At the O’Connor family’s estate. You don’t need to worry.”
She nodded and followed the nanny back.
She had foolishly assumed he might return to Paucaster, though that was surely a place no one wanted to go back to.
Back in her room, Callie discovered that from her window, she could clearly see Nelson’s car. He hadn’t left yet. He still stood there, gazing in the direction of the Ellison family
