When Grape clambered over the door frame into the study, Nelson was pouring a glass of water for Callie.
“How much of my conversation with Rudy Simpson earlier did you catch?” he asked.
Callie took a sip, her face blank with confusion. “What conversation? I wasn’t listening. What did you say?”
She truly hadn’t heard; her attention had been entirely on the documents before her.
Nelson smiled wryly, as though he’d expected this. “I said—”
“Mommy!” Grape skipped over the threshold, calling out joyfully.
Both of them turned simultaneously. Seeing the small figure, their eyes softened. The tension and heaviness that had filled the room vanished.
“Awake from your nap?” Nelson bent down and lifted her in his arms. “Adalia.”
Callie teased the little girl. “Even though she has a proper name now, it still feels strange to hear it.”
“Precisely because it feels strange, we should use it more often,” Nelson replied.
