Nelson let out a contemptuous chuckle at her words, nodding slightly. "Yes, that’s how you’ve always seen me. Then and now."
His tone was sharp, the words piercing, and there was no taking them back.
He stepped around her and moved to the window. "I’m not wrong."
Silence filled the room behind him, a suffocating despair spreading through the space. It was a long while before the faint sound of a door closing broke the stillness.
Nelson had left.
Callie stood by the window, watching as the man walked away beneath the outstretched branches of the magnolia tree. His figure was silent, his steps steady, and he never looked back.
She clenched her fists, a deep and oppressive discomfort settling in her chest.
