Curious, Mabel asked, "What is it? Why are you being all mysterious?"
Luther naturally kept it a secret. "The mystery is part of the surprise. Don't fuss; you'll find out soon enough."
"Fine. I'll trust you this time," she said, not thinking too much of it. To her, just being able to live a quiet, peaceful life with him was the greatest gift of all.
Back at home, Luther opened the fridge and pulled out a cake. Mabel's eyes lit up.
After weeks of eating nothing but healthy, bland meals alongside him, she'd been craving something sweet. She hadn't said anything, but he'd clearly noticed.
"Is this the present?" she asked, rushing over with a childlike excitement.
He nodded. "Yeah. Want to try a bite?"
Mabel didn't hesitate. She grabbed a fork, scooped up a slice that had already been plated, and took a big bite. Sweetness filled her mouth, but a second later, her brows furrowed in confusion.
