I could still feel the heat on my skin when we yanked the car doors open and leapt out.
No hesitation. No looking back.
My feet slammed against the asphalt with such force my knees nearly buckled, but I didn't stop.
I couldn't.
"Move!" Alpha Sherman shouted beside me, his voice sharp enough to cut through the incessant beeping that seemed to be counting down our final moments.
His hand gripped mine so tightly it hurt, but I said nothing as we sprinted along the highway, wind whipping past us.
My only thought was that we weren't going to make it.
And then the worst happened.
The explosion tore through the air—so loud that I didn't even hear it at first.
What I registered was the light.
A blinding flash of orange and white heat that turned the world inside out.
The force hit me like a battering ram, sending me flying forward as my fingers slipped from Alpha Sherman's grasp.
We both crashed onto the highway, my elbows and knees scraping against the rough surface, searing pain shoot
