"No, she is coming ," Mason said with a laugh, rubbing the back of his neck. "She's just running behind schedule."
I pressed my fingers against my temple where the pain kept hammering away. "How far behind?"
"About fifteen, twenty minutes max," he said, scrolling through his messages. "Look, if you're not feeling it, we can bail. No big deal. Sorry for dragging you out here just to sit around awkwardly."
"Don't worry about it," I said, trying to sound upbeat but failing miserably. "Twenty minutes is fine. Maybe this coffee will kick in and I'll feel well again."
I took a deep breath and heard myself saying, "Actually, I should be the one apologizing for that whole disaster at your gala."
