He soaked up her warmth and the feel of her tiny body in his arms and he thanked a god he didn’t believe in for bringing the little girl back to him unharmed.
“How about we go home now?” he said.
“I’m not leaving without Becky,” she said.
“Oh, honey, I can’t—”
“Why can’t you?” he asked, lifting his head to look at her over Abby’s shoulder. “I still don’t even know why you left.”
“Oh Barry, didn’t you read the letter?”
“No I didn’t,” he said. “I didn’t read it because I want to hear it from you.”
“It was just too hard seeing you and Heather—”
“There is nothing between Heather and me—”
Becky scoffed. “That’s not what it looked like to me.”
“What does that mean?”
Becky closed her eyes and shook her head. “Not here,” she said. “Not now.”
“So come back to the house with us so we can talk. We really need to talk.”
“I don’t think that’s a good idea, not with Heather—”
“Heather’s gone,” he said. “I asked her to leave.”
