Chapter 534
Avery spotted Nadine and Sean standing downstairs through the window. Without a second thought, she dashed out to greet them in her pajamas and slippers.
As soon as she got close to Nadine, Avery threw her arms around her. "You're finally back, babe! I missed you so much! Seriously, you heartless woman, you were gone forever! I thought you'd let Brad sweep you off your feet again!"
Her playful, whiny tone amused Nadine. She wrapped her arms around her friend and responded with a smile, "Oh, please. There's no way you actually missed me. You probably just missed my cooking, you two-faced liar!"
Avery gently nudged her. "You don't have to spell it out like that, you know? We're besties, aren't we?"
The girls continued their banter as they made their way upstairs. As soon as they walked in, Sean changed his shoes and went straight to his room to play with his toys. He was supposed to video call Keira, who was already waiting for him. He couldn't break his promise.
As soon as the little one was out of sight, Avery's expression changed dramatically. Without missing a beat, she slapped the back of Nadine's hand and demanded, "Alright, let's hear it! What happened? You were out all night, and you even spent the night at Phoenix Villa. Are you going to get back with him?
"Let me remind you that you'll only be miserable for life if you fall in love with them! Don't tell me you've forgotten all that!"
The fact that Nadine had spent the night at Phoenix Villa hit Avery like a ton of bricks. She immediately freaked out and thought Nadine had gotten back to be with Brad. She couldn't believe Nadine would forgive him after everything he'd done.
"Damn, she must be desperate," Avery thought. Hence, she wanted to get the truth out of Nadine as soon as she saw her.
Nadine knew her friend had gotten the wrong idea, so she briefly explained that she and Sean had simply slept in Sean's room last night. "Don't worry, babe. When I was in love with Brad, I loved him with everything I had.
"But now that I don't love him anymore, I'm capable of walking away decisively. I already know that Brad's in love with Jean, and there's no chance for us anymore."
Regardless of how polite and even gentle Brad had been toward her while she was at Phoenix Villa the past day, he was already dead to her.
Realizing that Nadine was still thinking straight, Avery patted her on the shoulder. "Great! Now that's what it means to be clear-headed. Remember, never fall in love with a man!"
Nadine smiled and picked up her medical files before heading back to her room to study.
…
In the blink of an eye, it was Monday, and the weather was beautiful. The sun had risen from beyond the horizon early in the morning, bathing the world in warm light.
Nadine led Sean downstairs, intending to hail a cab at the community entrance to take him to school. As soon as they reached the first floor, however, she noticed a Bentley Mulsanne parked below.
The driver's window was rolled down, and when she looked up, she saw a strikingly handsome man sitting inside, a cigarette between his fingers. His eyes were slightly narrowed as he looked in her direction.
As soon as he noticed her, he swiftly snuffed out his cigarette and got out of the car. He opened the rear door and gestured for Nadine to get in. "Hop in. I'll give you a ride."
Nadine hesitated as she didn't want to have too much contact with him. Brad noticed her reluctance and added, "I'm here to drop Sean off at school. If we don't leave soon, we'll be late."
The woman took a deep breath and got into his car. Brad closed the door and returned to the driver's seat, fastening his seatbelt and stepping on the gas.
After dropping Sean off at school, she looked at Brad, who was standing in her way, and frowned. "Get out of my way, Mr. Hamilton."
