Rivers stood as well, falling into step beside me as we left my office and headed toward the secure wing where the most problematic elders were housed. It wasn't quite prison—we couldn't legally detain council members without formal charges—but it was close. Comfortable rooms with restricted movement and constant supervision, ostensibly for their "protection" after the Amaya scandal had revealed how deep corruption in the elder system ran.
The guard at the entrance nodded respectfully as we approached, stepping aside to let us through. The hallway beyond was well-lit and clean, more like a hospital ward than a detention center, but the locks on the doors and the security cameras told the real story.
