Chapter 49
Travis dragged Aidan into his office as soon as they were done at the construction site - after pouring him a cup of coffee, the former asked his friend in a serious voice, “Aidan, tell me the truth - were you behind Bryan’s death?”
Aidan frowned, “What do you mean? Didn’t you hear what Robert said? His death was an accident…” he paused for a moment when he realized what Travis was implying, “Wait a minute - are you trying to say that there’s something strange about the way that Bryan had died?”
“Yes, that’s what I’m suggesting,” Travis frowned, “The way that Bryan’s skull was dented...it didn’t seem to have been caused by a falling object. It looked...it looked more like it was caused by blunt force trauma...a blunt instrument to the back of the head…”
Aidan was silent for a long while as he absorbed this information. Travis pondered for a moment before he suggested, “Do you think that the loan sharks might’ve been behind this? Are they the kind to kill those who are unable to pay off their debt?”
“That wouldn’t make any sense though,” Aidan frowned, “Bryan’s debt had been paid off a long time ago...besides, those loan sharks had been sent by me. They wouldn’t possibly dare to kill him without me permitting them to do so. Are you sure that you haven’t been mistaken?” Travis couldn’t help but scoff slightly - “Who’s the doctor here, me or you?” he asked sarcastically.
Aidan was quiet for a moment before he fished his mobile phone out of his pocket to call his secretary, Caleb Leslie. “Hello? Yes - it’s me. There’s something not quite right about the way that Bryan had died - I want you to send someone to conduct a thorough investigation into his death.”
Aidan’s phone rang again as soon as he put down the phone - he picked it up when he saw that it was Robert. “Second Young Master, bad news,” Robert informed on the other end in a rather anxious tone, “Mr Harvey...he passed out.” Aidan’s eyes immediately turned cold at this, “What’s going on with him?”
“Well, he was overwhelmed by grief when he saw his dead son lying on the mortuary table...besides, he’s already old and in poor health...it’s not completely surprising that he would pass out from the shock…” Robert explained.
After Aidan ended the call, he looked up and informed Travis, “Richard Harvey has passed out from grief and shock.” Travis stood up as soon as he heard this, “I’ll go over to have a look at him right now. Just as Aidan was about to follow his friend, Travis stopped him - “I think it’s best that you stay here,” he said, “Perhaps Mr Harvey would be fine with seeing you there, but Eddie...aren’t you worried that he might try and pick a fight with you if he sees you?”
“What makes you think that I’m afraid of him?” Aidan retorted in an icy voice. “It’s not a matter of whether you are afraid of him or not,” Travis sighed, “The Harvey Family has just lost a member of their family - please do them a favor and don’t try to stir up trouble with them on this day.” He then walked out of his office and closed the door behind him.
Aidan went to sit on the sofa and slumped down onto it, a contemplative expression on his face…
..
Travis arranged for Richard to be hospitalized as soon as he’d rushed over and examined the latter. Eliana followed Travis out of the room while Eddie stayed behind to look over Richard. “How is my father?” Eliana asked worriedly. Travis did not bother to sugarcoat anything - “Your father isn’t in good health - after all, he’d suffered a lot over the past few years and has developed many health, particularly heart, conditions. However, rest assured that I will get the best doctors to treat him to the best of their abilities.”
“Thank you so much,” Eliana exclaimed graciously, her eyes reddening slightly as she did so. Travis patted Eliana slightly on the shoulder to reassure her before saying, “In that case, you should go back in and keep him company. Alright, I’ll get going now…”
“Hang on a second,” Eliana said abruptly, “Can I ask you a question?”
Travis nodded, “Alright, go ahead.”
“Bryan...he didn’t die by accident, did he?” Eliana asked. Travis stared at the former in disbelief - even though she was not only a medical student, but also the brightest and most promising student of her batch, she shouldn’t have been able to figure out that something was off considering the limited amount of experience and exposure that she had.
Travis couldn’t help but hesitate a little - he couldn’t decide whether or not he should tell Eliana the truth before Aidan completed his investigation. After some moment of contemplation, Travis asked, “What makes you say that?” Eliana did not hold back - “I don’t think that my brother would look this intact had he really been killed by a heavy falling object.”
Eliana pondered for a moment before she asked quietly, “Did Aidan…” Travis cut her off before she could finish her sentence, “Ellie, it couldn’t have been him - why would Aidan waste his time killing him via such a complicated way when he could’ve easily done so through many other simpler methods?”
Eliana was silent - Travis had just indirectly admitted that Bryan had been murdered. “Why won’t you believe him?” Travis asked, his voice slightly traced with worry. Eliana scoffed internally as she clenched her fists, “I would’ve believed him in the past...but I’m not so sure anymore…”
