Tristan's heart skipped a beat, but he did not show it on his face.
"Be honest now," Sage teased, her voice lifting from her obvious good spirits. "Did you come here to go on a Valentine's date with that pretty young lady Ren mentioned before?"
Hearing that, Tristan let out an almost undetectable sigh of relief and smiled. "I wish."
The answer was vague, but Sage had no interest in pressing him right now. The overwhelming happiness of the evening had nearly swept her off her feet.
Hearing that there'd been no progress on his end, her smile only grew sweeter. Her voice was soft and playful. "I'll let you off this time."
As Tristan listened, the image of Olivia forcing herself to stay composed—those tear-filled eyes, that fragile silhouette as she crouched by the wall—flashed in his mind. Without realizing it, his tone cooled slightly as he hummed a curt reply.
