Chapter 133
The black sedan moved steadily along the mountain road, its rear end looking like it'd been through a warzone.
Celeste curled up in the backseat, knees pulled to her chest. She'd tried to sleep, but her legs were too numb and achy. Giving up, she stared blankly out the window, zoning out.
Before they'd left, she'd reminded Ethan that her car still had that shell pendant hanging on it. He just said he'd already taken it down and kept it safe. The fact that he had bothered to come all the way up the mountain just for that pendant? Yeah, that said everything.
"We'll be down the mountain in a bit. After that, I won't stick with you. Two people hanging out together draws too much attention. Foster should be here with a car before sunrise. Find a villager to put you up for the night. Be careful."
"Huh?" Celeste blinked, slow to catch on. "You're really leaving me on my own out here in the middle of nowhere? Aren't you worried I'll get trafficked or something?"
"That's why I said be careful."
