Chapter 293
When Celeste Harper stepped out of the station, the bright afternoon sun hit her square in the face.
Behind her, just outside the interrogation room, the police chief was tearing into the officer who’d just questioned her—loud enough for the whole building to hear. The officer, who’d been mighty self-important during the interrogation, now looked like a kicked puppy, nodding non-stop and trying to suck up.
"Chief, I was just following standard procedure..."
"Yeah? Following procedure? Do you even know who you were questioning? Let’s say she did kill someone—that’s still not your call to make. I don’t even have that kind of guts, and I’m the chief. Maybe you should take my seat while you’re at it?"
"No, sir! That’s not what I meant..."
"Save it."
The case was still murky, and Celeste was technically the top suspect. The only reason she was out now was because of her identity—and because Ethan Shaw had pulled some serious strings to get his adjutant Mr. Foster to bail her out directly.
