Seeing Celeste Harper standing there, clearly shaken and out of it, Mr. Foster spoke up gently, trying not to spook her even more.
“Ma’am, don’t worry, the commander’s fine. When it all happened, the deputy commander took a bullet for him. The shot grazed right past a major artery near her heart. She’s still unconscious, so the commander’s been staying with her this whole time.”
Before Celeste could respond, Alan Parker let out a snort and said with a scowl, “Isn’t that the same deputy commander who’s been throwing a fit and talking about divorce? She wouldn’t care who gets hurt anyway. She only had eyes for that traitor.”
“Ava Quarles was no traitor.”
Celeste suddenly turned, fixing Alan with an icy glare. Her fists clenched so tightly her knuckles went pale, eyes bloodshot and voice tight with fury.
“I don’t care what any of you say or what chaos went down out there. Unless I saw it with my own eyes, I’m not buying it. Ava would never do something like that.”
