Caleb Summers's voice echoed in the courtyard, the evening breeze rustling the camphor tree leaves above their heads.
Celeste Harper paused for a moment, her brows tightening slightly as if something had crossed her mind. Then she said, a bit impatiently, “Alright, enough with the wild guesses. Who cares if he’s making stuff for his grandson or his son? Quit overthinking things. They’re just neighbors, nothing more.”
With that, she turned and walked back inside.
Caleb looked like he still had more to say, but Lily Garland shot him a glare. “Serves you right for running your mouth.”
“Wait a sec—weren’t you the one fanning the flames just now?”
“Yeah, but only ‘cause you started it. You’ve got way too much time on your hands.”
“Come on, can’t I care a little bit about the neighborhood's safety? I’m getting blamed no matter what.” He sighed, clearly a little thrown off. As he watched Celeste’s retreating back, his voice dropped to a whisper. “Don’t you think her reaction was kinda off?”
