Those words hit Celeste like a gut punch. Her face went pale in an instant, but thankfully the dim lighting masked it from Ethan's eyes.
"Yeah..." she forced herself to stay calm, eyes flicking slightly. "Three years behind bars-kinda feels like I clawed my way back, doesn't it?"
It wasn't a perfect answer, but it sounded legit enough. Celeste managed to steady herself, her tone firmer now. "Anyway, I'm done with this industry."
That one sentence-"I'm done"-pretty much shut Ethan's doubts right up.
I mean, she didn't want to keep doing it. What could he really say to that? Maybe he still had unanswered questions, but now he didn't have the ground to ask.
"You spent years training for this, just to drop it like that? Doesn't that feel like a waste?"
"What about you then?"
Celeste's eyes drifted to the blanket. "You seriously plan to stay stuck in a military admin job your whole life? Just ‘cause people said that's all you're fit for, you're going with it?"
