"Sounds pretty messed up," I said, trying to make sense of it all.
"Yeah," he replied softly.
I glanced out through the curtain of rain, observing the lake in the gaps. I took a deep breath and admired the full moon’s glow reflecting off the water, trying to find a moment of calm amidst the chaos.
The air felt pleasantly cool, hinting that autumn was right around the corner. I could almost feel the crispness in the air, imagining bonfires glowing under the full moon every night. It seemed as though someone was keeping a watchful eye on me, feeling my agony and sharing in all of our pain.
Being numb was a peculiar kind of blessing. It was as if she knew I couldn’t handle the pain and gave me the gift of feeling nothing. I understand and empathize with others, but when it comes to my own feelings, I feel detached and distant.
