Henry walked in and seemed taken aback to find me sitting in the master bedroom. After all, Grandpa had assigned rooms for Evan and me. Technically, I should’ve been in Evan’s room, not here.
“Looking for me?” he asked casually as he shrugged off his heavy coat, though the question was clearly rhetorical.
I stayed where I was, not even flinching, just fixing him with a cold, unbroken stare.
He poured himself a cup of hot water and walked over, his voice smooth like a melody. “I’m glad you came back today. Grandpa hasn’t smiled like that for ages. Your lips are chapped—here, have some water.”
But his attempt at kindness felt so hollow, so meaningless. I just stared at him, my mind a storm of bitterness and resentment. There was no way to hide the hatred boiling inside me as I watched him close the distance between us.
About a foot away, he froze, his gaze locking onto my hand lying on my lap. His expression shifted to shock as he spotted what I was holding—a fruit knife.
