Chapter 87 Pass Along a Message
"Lou, what time are you coming over? I made you some soup—"
The moment the call connected, Mildred spoke warmly, but she was interrupted.
"Oyster soup again?" Elijah asked.
"Elijah, I didn't know you were with Lou. When are you two coming back?" Mildred asked cheerfully.
"We aren't going back. Keep the soup for yourselves. Who knows? Maybe you and Dad will get lucky again and give me a little brother or sister."
Elijah's words caught Louisa off guard.
Mildred promptly launched into a scolding. "Do you not have anything better to say? Hand the phone to Lou."
"If I don't want to hear it, why would I let her hear it?" Elijah shot back at Mildred without hesitation.
Even without taking the phone, Louisa heard everything—she simply pretended not to. She had asked him to answer precisely so she wouldn't have to deal with that.
"Alright. I'm hanging up. We're being intimate right now. If you want a grandchild, stop nagging. Hanging up now works better than praying in church."
