"Nellie, Horatio never shows up. You can't keep dragging this out forever. Your marriage is basically over. Why not get a divorce and start a new life?"
Jeremy draped an arm over Nellie's shoulder. His voice was gentle, but every word tightened the pressure, cornering her step by step.
Nellie flinched and pushed him away.
"He… He can't get divorced… right now."
"Why not? He can't hide forever, can he?"
I caught a brief flicker of impatience in his eyes.
"He… He's dead!"
Nellie practically shouted it, then froze in place, as if she hadn't expected the words to come out.
Jeremy's expression froze. Shock and disbelief crossed his face, followed by a split-second flash of relief and quiet triumph, so brief it was almost unnoticeable. He quickly masked it, replacing it with grief and horror.
