Relief washed over Kayla as she dropped Skylar off. The disastrous date was a stark reminder of the complexities of her own situation with Lance.
But at least, she thought, with a smile, Lance wouldn't subject her to anything like that. Tonight, she was looking forward to some quiet, maybe even a chance to talk about what happened earlier – the kiss, the way he stood up for her.
Reaching the penthouse, she buzzed herself in, a warm anticipation bubbling in her stomach. The door swung open, revealing a sight that brought that anticipation to a screeching halt.
Nestled at the threshold, a tiny figure with pigtails bounced excitedly. "Auntie Kayla! Auntie Kayla!"
Kayla blinked, surprised. Four-year-old Maya, Lance's daughter, was beaming at her, a stuffed unicorn clutched in her tiny hands. Before Kayla could react, Maya launched herself into a hug, wrapping her tiny arms around Kayla's legs.
