CHAPTER FOURTEEN – WHAT’S MORE TO KNOW?
One particularly grueling day, as Cassie struggled to balance a tray of drinks, she overheard Lisa talking to a customer at a nearby table.
"Oh, you know how it is with some people," Lisa was saying in a stage whisper. "They think they're too good for honest work. I heard she's been interviewing at other places on the sly. Probably why her service has been so sloppy lately."
The tray slipped from Cassie's hands, sending glasses crashing to the floor. The restaurant fell silent, all eyes turning to her. Cassie stood frozen, surrounded by broken glass and spilled drinks, as Mr. Thompson's voice boomed across the room.
"Cassie! My office. Now."
As she followed him, leaving a trail of sticky footprints, Cassie caught sight of Lisa's triumphant grin. In that moment, something inside her snapped.
In Mr. Thompson's office, Cassie didn't wait for him to speak. "I quit," she said, her voice shaking with a mixture of anger and relief.
