(Aaron’s POV) Caspian paces the clearing where we usually meet Mae’s wolf. It has occurred to me since Caspian revealed his name to me that Mae’s wolf has a name, too, though I’ll never know it. I wonder if Mae does. Though Caspian said humans learn their wolves’ names when they’re ready to be their best selves. The statement is vague in true wolf fashion, but when I look at everything Mae is accomplishing and becoming, I don’t doubt that this is the best version of herself. I’m sure she knows her wolf’s name. Caspian’s growing impatience trickles into my own emotions. They’re usually here by now. Are they not coming? Is something keeping them from meeting us? Are they in danger? Caspian snorts in frustration, then lets out a howl. They are not in danger, he tells me. Even from here, I can hear Mae baking in her kitchen.
