#Chapter 58
Mae’s POV
Blaze finally perks up at Aaron’s confession. But while she seems to be inexplicably experiencing some sort of relief that I don’t have space to examine, I’m burning with rage. “Excuse me?”
Henry just leans back into his chair, silent, shocked, and calm.
Aaron’s gaze doesn’t leave Henry’s. “With one call, I started your career-ending rumor. And I regret it.”
“You regret it now that you need our help for something,” I correct.
Aaron turns his gaze to me. “I regret it because that’s not the man I want to be anymore.” There’s something else in his eyes, but he quickly blinks it away as he looks once more at Henry.
“I’m sorry,” Aaron says, and I remember when he stormed over to my house, demanding to know why I wanted to run for president. I remember Aaron leaving once Henry arrived, barely uttering a quiet apology on his way out. I remember Henry assuming Aaron was apologizing to me, when I had the distinct sense it had been directed at Henry.
