Madeline’s smile grew wider, her eyes glittering with mischief. “Mr. Smith has a point, Ethan,” she purred, her voice as smooth as honey. “Perhaps you should lighten up a bit. After all, we’re here to celebrate, aren’t we?”
Ethan, his frustration growing, turned to Madeline, his voice low and dangerous. “Enough,” he hissed. “We’re not playing this game.”
Madeline’s expression hardened, her eyes flashing with annoyance. “And why not?” she asked, her voice acidic. “Are you afraid of a little competition, Ethan? Or are you afraid that Mr. Smith might see right through your little charade?”
Mr. Smith, sensing the tension mounting between them, held up a hand. “Now, now,” he said, his voice light and jovial. “Let’s not forget what this evening is all about. We’re here to celebrate, not bicker like children.”
Ethan, his jaw clenched, forced a smile. “Of course, Mr. Smith. You’re absolutely right.” He turned to Madeline, his voice colder than ice. “Madeline, shall we join the other guests
