Another deafening thunderclap cracked through the air, and Charisse's heart nearly jumped out of her chest. It pounded like crazy, almost hitting its limit.
Yeah, she'd heard all about how ruthless Clayton was, but seeing it firsthand—watching him casually decide someone's fate like he was talking about the weather—it was on a whole different level. It shook her to the core.
One of his guys pulled out a sleek little Swiss army knife and moved toward Owen.
Suddenly, chaos erupted outside. Heavy footsteps rushed in just before a blood-curdling scream pierced the air—"No!"
A middle-aged woman burst through the door, only to be held back a few meters from Owen by Clayton's men. She reached out in vain.
"Owen! Owen!" she cried, face twisted in terror. "What are you doing?! Are you trying to kill him?! No! You can't! He didn't do anything wrong!"
