Cassandra leaned back against the couch, her voice icy. "I don't want a single word of our conversation today to get out."
Serena stared at the photos of her two grandsons. She didn't have the nerve to argue. "Mrs. Hart, don't worry. I won't run my mouth."
Cassandra pulled out a bank card and slid it across the table toward Serena. "Here is four months of your salary. Consider it a token of my gratitude for your hard work in caring for Ash and Elle these past two years."
Naturally, Serena wasn't going to refuse money. She accepted it fearfully yet gratefully. "Thank you, Mrs. Hart!"
The carrot-and-stick approach always worked best with people like Serena.
Cassandra rose and glanced at the kitchen, which looked as though a storm had passed through. "Please clean up the mess before you leave."
Without another word, she headed upstairs.
Now that Serena was dealt with, Cassandra needed a new housekeeper for the children. She was officially returning to work next Monday.
