Katelyn’s POV
Matthew stood in the doorway, blinking against the harsh light. Ethan and I remained frozen for a beat, the tension between us still tangible in the narrow space.
“I…uh,” Matthew said, eyes darting between us. “The guard just told me they fixed the alarm system. Everything’s back up.”
I stepped away from Ethan quickly, smoothing my blouse like it could hide the moment we’d nearly lost ourselves in.
My cheeks burned. “Thanks,” I said, my voice too calm, too casual.
Ethan cleared his throat, brushing past Matthew. “Right. Good.”
Matthew gave a little nod, eyes narrowing slightly, like he was trying to piece together what he’d just walked in on.
“They’re having a staff meal upstairs,” he added. “One of the girls invited me, you… and Ethan too. Want to come?”
I hesitated. My chest still felt tight, every emotion from the last hour tangled and knotted like fishing wire.
