Inside the dim, cramped room, a man and a woman sat back-to-back on the cold floor, blindfolded, their hands tied behind them and legs bound tight.
The man shook his head slightly, now fully awake.
"Emily, you okay?"
She let out a soft hum. "Yeah, I'm fine. What about you, Professor Lewis?"
"I'm alright too. I'm sorry for dragging you into this."
Emily chuckled, voice light. "It's really no big deal. I don't have anyone I'd leave behind... Even if something happens to me, I doubt anyone would cry."
Brandon went quiet for a moment, clearly surprised. "What about your family? Don't you have any siblings?"
"My parents divorced when I was seven. They both started new families and didn't want me around. I lived with my grandma. But when I was fifteen, she passed away from lung cancer. That was the hardest time of my life—way worse than the divorce. I swore then I'd become a doctor, to save people like her."
