Chapter 43 Confusion

The ride was silent as I sat by the window, staring out as the trees faded out of sight into an unfamiliar terrain.
I clutched the phone on my lap, staring at the text again from the unknown sender. Here I was, headed to what was possibly a trap without telling Lucien. I had no weapon on me, and I wasn't even going to count the pepper spray I kept just in my back pocket.
I gave a gulp. I could turn around now, end this before it even started. But my mind went back to Mira, and I knew I had to save her no matter what.
Suddenly, the taxi screeched to a halt. I jolted forward on my seat, gripping the iron bar.
"Excuse me, sir," I said, staring in confusion.
The driver didn't look up, his eyes meeting mine from the front mirror. "This is our last stop," he announced.
Glancing around, I realized there was no one else on the bus, just me and empty chairs.
"What do you mean this is your last stop?" I asked, already getting out.
