Chapter 9
The next time I saw Owen, he'd lost his earlier friendliness. There was a thin layer of wariness in his eyes. I'd probably become a scheming woman in his mind by now.
I didn't particularly care. In fact, it suited me perfectly. When I passed him, I stopped and couldn't help but laugh at the guarded look on his face.
I moved closer to him and stood on my tiptoes. The distance between us shrank dramatically, close enough that I could hear his breathing.
"Ms. Wynn, what…"
I plucked a small piece of paper stuck to his hair and held it up between my fingers, teasing him. "What are you afraid of? Think I'm going to eat you alive? Your heart is beating so fast."
Today was the day I was discharged from the hospital. Harvey sent Owen to pick me up for dinner at a restaurant. I chose a light blue dress, the kind his first love used to wear.
I sat down across from him. When he looked at me, his eyes were full of tender affection. But I couldn't tell if he was really seeing me or the shadow
