Carrie’s Point of View
As soon as Lucas left his room, I listened closely to the sounds of him leaving the house. I was surprised to even hear a car drive down the gravel pavement outside, away from the house. I listened to the soft rumbling of the car, wanting nothing more than its purr to help me drift off to sleep. Now that he was gone, all I wanted was to curl up in a ball and sleep. I recalled the things he said to me, and shivered at his cruelness.
There were times when I thought I sensed some sort of kindness or humanity in him, but each and every instance he has proved me wrong. First, by beating me. Then, beating Jenna. Again, I hoped there was some sort of mercy in him when he ordered me on bed rest until I wasn't ill. He proved me wrong in one short conversation.
I couldn't dwell on him right now, though. I needed to focus on searching this room again.
I pulled the comforter back from my body, and slowly inched out of it's warm embrace. I placed both my feet on the ground.
