The elevator doors slid open, and Samuel walked straight in.
Lisa tried to follow, but Uriah blocked her and said, "Ms. Harrington, please stay here."
The doors closed slowly before her eyes. The metal reflected her face, twisted in humiliation.
Samuel's detached, even annoyed, gaze felt like a slap, as if it were laughing at her earlier daydreams and fantasies.
So, what did this all mean? Were the desserts and coffee not for her at all?
A wave of crushing shame engulfed her. She watched the elevator numbers tick down, but didn't dare to follow. Why? Just why was this happening?
Unable to understand why Samuel's attitude had flipped so suddenly, Lisa finally pulled out her phone. Forgetting all decorum, she opened Uriah's contact and sent a long string of voice messages.
"What's going on, Mr. Quade? Why did Sam block me? What did I even do wrong? You guys can't treat me like this! Tell me—is there some kind of misunderstanding? Tell him to take my call…"
