Chapter 21
"I don't hate you because all of that is already in the past," Iris said, meeting Ethan's eyes. Her gaze was clear and calm. "I'm doing well now. I have a family, someone I love, and a new life. You, on the other hand, are just part of my past."
Ethan blanched in a heartbeat. He staggered back a step and leaned against the rough tree trunk to keep himself upright. The empty sleeve swayed weakly in the wind, like a white flag of surrender.
Just then, Nate pulled out a white invitation from his pocket and handed it to him.
"Our wedding is on the 15th of next month," he explained calmly. "If you're free, you're welcome to join us, Mr. Cooper."
The gold-embossed lettering on the invitation caught the morning light and stung Ethan's eyes. He stared at the pristine white card for what seemed like an eternity.
Then, he slowly reached out with his trembling right hand and took it. His movements were slow and reverent, as if he were holding a fragile treasure.
