In Kingsbridge, Lynette's condition had worsened. Philip had drawn up several treatment plans for her, but above all, he emphasized proper sleep and regular meals.
That night, Lynette was startled awake by a knock at her door. At first, it was faint. Then it grew louder, heavier—until the sound turned into hacking at the door with a knife.
Terrified, she called the police immediately. Officers arrived and took the man away.
It turned out he was a convicted sex offender, recently released. He had noticed Lynette on the street, found her attractive, and begun following her. But since he hadn't physically harmed her, the police couldn't detain him.
"Ms. Sterling, it's dangerous for you to live alone. Do you have friends or family in Kingsbridge? We strongly recommend you stay somewhere else. You were lucky this time, but there's no guarantee there won't be a next."
Lynette's family was gone. There was no one she could rely on anymore.
