Rafe's POV
I settled into the creaky armchair, Jackson nestled securely against my chest, his warmth a small comfort in the vast, cold space. He was asleep again, his tiny face serene, utterly unaware of the danger that swirled around him. I leaned my head back, closing my eyes. I had to find Caleb. It was the only way. I just had to figure out how to do it without putting Jackson – or myself – in even greater peril. The city waited, brooding and indifferent. And I, Rafe, a temporary guardian, a reluctant protector, would have to navigate its treacherous depths, all for the sake of a child who deserved a life far better than the one I could offer him. My resolve hardened. I wouldn't fail Jackson. Not again.
