The embassy was eerily quiet.
Reuben Rainsford led them into the lounge. Aside from two staff members, they hadn’t bumped into any other Chinese nationals seeking shelter here.
"Here, dinner was just made in the kitchen. Grab a bite," Reuben said as he and the staff pushed in a food cart.
"Thanks, man," Reuben gave him a sincere pat on the shoulder.
In times like this, decent food was hard to come by. Even for an embassy, feeding this many people wasn’t easy. Reuben knew this was only made possible because Reuben had pulled a few strings.
"No need for thanks, we’re all on the same team here," Reuben said warmly.
People had been a little hesitant at first, but once Reuben broke the ice, they relaxed. Soon, everyone was digging in without holding back.
They had some dry rations before, mostly flatbread, but it was nothing like a hot meal. With warm dishes in front of them, and even seaweed egg soup, it felt like a feast after days of fleeing.
