Maybe I was just overthinking it, but the moment I said that, Oliver looked super on edge.
But I had to say it. This stuff matters.
I held my ground. “We’ll end up going our separate ways. I can’t take this.”
The light hit Oliver’s face just right, and I could tell he was in a bad mood.
His blue eyes went icy, and even his voice dropped a few notches in tone.
He didn’t bother looking at me and said, “Let’s talk about that when we actually break up.”
I blinked, turning slightly to look at him. I noticed his Adam’s apple bob a little.
He was clearly pissed, and honestly, I didn’t get why.
But then his face shifted back to that usual, perfectly composed smile.
“The whole mate thing? There’s a system. There are rules. Ending it isn’t random.”
“We literally just became mates today—don’t you think it’s way too soon to start worrying about breaking up?”
Sitting in the passenger seat, I stared at him, stunned.
His smile was flawless, like he’d practiced it a hundred times.
