It went dead silent on the other end.
Then, it sounded like someone yanked the phone away. What followed was Lucien's voice, slurred and obsessive:
"Calliope... I'm sorry. I should've protected you..."
"I'll make Rosemary pay for this... You're my woman. I won't let anyone hurt you. Not even a little."
"Nobody!"
"Mr. Sterling! Sir, you've had too much!"
"Come on, help him into the car!"
After a burst of chaos, the call abruptly ended.
The night breeze on the balcony lifted the strands of hair on Conrad's forehead, but the gloom in his eyes didn't budge.
He lit up his screen, and out of sheer impulse, pulled up Calliope's call log.
A long list of "Lucien" leaped out at him - answered calls and way more missed ones. Way more than she ever called him.
Conrad's lips pressed into a tight line; something heavy sat on his chest.
Without thinking, he found Lucien's number, blocked it, and erased it.
Then he opened Ins and basically did a copy-paste of the same thing.
